Following an update in the legislation in 2015 the parents having their own baby, or adopting a baby, can request Shared Parental Leave (SPL) and Statutory Shared Parental Pay (ShPP).
Staff are entitled to share up to 50 weeks of leave and up to 37 weeks of pay between them. However, this time and remuneration must be taken within the first year after the child is born or the adoption is made.
It’s possible for staff to take leave in blocks separated by periods of work, or take the entire allowance in one block.
There are various criteria for shared parental leave which we’ve documented. It’s good practice to have a standard Shared Parental Leave Policy too.
